General Anesthesia Safe for C-Section, Say Obgyn Doctor

General Anesthesia

A recent study from the University of Pennsylvania shows that general anesthesia during cesarean sections (c-sections) is both safe and effective for mothers and babies. The findings challenge long-standing concerns that general anesthesia could harm newborns.

Researchers reviewed thirty years of clinical data comparing general anesthesia with spinal or epidural anesthesia. They found that Apgar scores and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission rates were similar across all types of anesthesia.

While spinal and epidural anesthesia are generally safe, up to one in six patients reported feeling pain during c-section. The lowest pain rates were 14% for spinal anesthesia, while epidural top-ups had up to 33% of patients reporting pain. Researchers warned that such pain can cause long-term emotional trauma.

“No patient should have to experience pain during cesarean section,” said Dr. Mark Neuman, senior author of the study. “Patients should never feel forced to choose between their baby’s health and avoiding surgical pain.”

The study does not suggest that general anesthesia should replace regional anesthesia. Instead, it emphasizes that patients should be fully informed about their options. Neonatal outcomes were similar regardless of anesthesia type, supporting general anesthesia as a reasonable choice in certain cases.

Experts also highlighted other challenges of c-section recovery, including persistent pain and sleep disturbances. These issues were linked to long-term impacts on maternal health, such as mood changes, reduced daily functioning, and increased cardiovascular risk.

“Having conversations about general anesthesia should not be taboo,” Dr. Neuman added. “Patients deserve options and informed choice in managing pain during c-section.”
