DCMH Hosts Health Checks at Men’s Health Tailgate Event

by Shreeya

In a community outreach effort tied to Men’s Health, Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) held a health-check event at its Rehabilitation & Medical Offices building this past Saturday. A total of 121 attendees participated, taking part in a range of free preventive screenings designed to offer a clear snapshot of overall health.

The procedures offered spanned several key areas. Participants could have A1c and lipid panel tests to gauge risks for diabetes and heart disease. A complete blood count (CBC) and a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) screened for general health, including liver and kidney function and blood chemistry.

Additional assessments looked at mobility and joint health through knee movement tests, and emotional well-being via mental health evaluations that included check-ins and resources.

Prostate health was addressed with PSA tests to identify potential signs of prostate cancer. Skin health was evaluated with skin cancer assessments that included spot checks and education on skin changes to monitor. Thyroid screenings were also available to detect hormonal imbalances that can affect energy and metabolism.

Eligibility screening for heart, lung, and colorectal services was conducted on-site. Attendees identified as eligible for heart or lung imaging could schedule those exams during the same visit, enhancing convenience and access to follow-up care.

Personalized follow-up was a core component of the event. After reviewing lab results and health questionnaires, each participant received tailored recommendations to guide ongoing health management.

The event also featured a broad presence from hospital departments and partners. Cancer Care and Infusion Services, DCMH’s Dietary Team, the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County, and Senior Life Solutions were on-site, offering information about services and ongoing wellness resources.

Attendees praised the event’s organization and efficiency. One participant remarked, “With how many people were here, I expected it would take a few hours to complete my screenings. I was really surprised — I was done within 30 minutes.”

The screenings yielded actionable follow-up for about 75% of attendees, underscoring the value of early detection in identifying hidden or emerging health issues before they escalate.

DCMH credit its success to more than 40 volunteers whose dedication and compassion helped make the day meaningful for every participant. Liz McCoy, Manager of Marketing & Communications, highlighted the impact of the initiative: “Just in the last few years, we’ve helped individuals discover undiagnosed cancer or learn they were diabetic by attending one of our free events. We are deeply grateful to our donors and the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County for making these life-changing screenings possible for more people in our community.”
