On the golf course, Bob Evans is known for his steady swing and steady resolve. When he stops a player, he often asks about the round and, if the moment feels right, about prostate cancer screening as well.
“There are a lot of people who aren’t aware that one out of eight men will get prostate cancer, the same rate as one out of eight women will get breast cancer,” Evans said.
The remark frames Evans’s personal mission. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009, and he credits early detection with saving his life. “It’s pretty devastating, and I had a choice: I could either crawl into a corner and say, ‘woe is me,’ or I could get after it, and I chose to get after it,” he recalled.
During his treatment journey, Evans became engaged with Movember, a leading global nonprofit focused on men’s health, including prostate cancer and mental health. “They focus on prostate cancer, and men’s mental health, which often go hand in hand when you receive a cancer diagnosis,” he said. Since his diagnosis, Evans has helped raise more than $130,000 for Movember.
“Sometimes I feel I’ve been placed on this earth to raise awareness about prostate cancer,” he added, noting that his role at Lansbrook Golf Club provides a platform to promote early detection. “It’s not something men regularly talk about, but I open that door and make it easy for men to share,” Evans said. “We can joke, but we also tackle serious topics about cancer and men’s mental health.”
November has become Movember’s defining month, characterized by fundraisers, mustaches, and community conversation. Evans calls the facial hair tradition “Moes,” a playful term that often sparks dialogue. “People would ask about the Moe, and I tell them I’m raising awareness for men’s health,” he explained. “It becomes a natural conversation starter.”
This year, Evans is hosting his largest fundraiser yet: The Big Swing for Men’s Health at Lansbrook Golf Club. The event kicks off Friday, November 7, at 8 a.m. and invites participants to join in for a morning of golf, camaraderie, and fundraising. “Come out, sign up, have fun, and help raise awareness. It’s all for a great cause. I’m living proof that Movember’s efforts pay off,” he said.
