This week, the United States non-profit Consumer Reports released a detailed investigation testing 23 protein powders and ready-to-drink shakes from widely used brands to assess the presence of heavy metals. Alarmingly, more than two-thirds of these products contained lead levels per recommended serving that exceeded California’s guideline of 0.5 micrograms (mcg) per day.
Protein powders are primarily consumed to build muscle, but some individuals use them for weight-loss programs, meal replacements, or to regain weight after illness or injury. The tested products included plant-based, organic, and animal- or dairy-derived proteins, with only one product free from detectable lead.
Historical Context: Lead in Supplements
Lead contamination in protein powders is not new. Consumer Reports noted that lead levels have risen since their previous 2010 report, with one product containing double the lead per serving compared to the worst performer in 2010. A separate 2018 study of 130 Amazon-listed protein powders found that 70% contained heavy metals. Similarly, a 2021 analysis of 36 protein powders revealed lead concentrations ranging from 0.8 to 88.4 mcg per kilogram, translating to 0.016 to 1.77 mcg per 20-gram serving.
Sources of Lead Contamination
Lead enters food and supplements through both natural and human-made sources. Natural sources include volcanic activity and weathering of rocks, while human-made sources include industrial processes, leaded petrol, and old paint. Crops can absorb lead from contaminated soil or water, which then enters the food chain.
US government testing from 2014 to 2016 detected lead in 27% of all food samples, while Australian testing in 2019 found 15% of 508 samples contained detectable lead. The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) model suggests this exposure corresponds to 0.018–0.16 mcg per kg body weight daily, equating to 1.26–11.2 mcg per day for a 70 kg adult.
Health Risks of Lead Exposure
Lead provides no health benefits and is toxic to nearly every organ system. Children are particularly vulnerable, with exposure linked to impaired cognitive and physical development, learning disabilities, and behavioral issues. In adults, high exposure may cause anemia, joint pain, kidney damage, and nerve damage. During pregnancy, lead can harm fetal development, and breastfeeding mothers may transmit lead through breast milk. The International Agency for Research on Cancer lists lead as a possible carcinogen.
Severe lead toxicity (blood levels above 120 mcg per deciliter) can be fatal. As exposure accumulates, health risks increase significantly.
Guidelines for Safe Lead Intake
Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) does not set a daily dietary limit for lead, instead recommending minimizing exposure. Blood levels should ideally remain below 5 mcg per decilitre. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated safe daily lead limits in 2022: 2.2 mcg for children and 8.8 mcg for women of childbearing age, higher than California’s stricter limits.
Using FDA standards, all products tested by Consumer Reports could be consumed daily by adults, though this does not account for additional exposure from other foods or environmental sources.
What This Means for Australian Consumers
Many products tested in the US are available online or in stores in Australia. However, there is no local data on lead content in protein powders manufactured or sold domestically. Without independent chemical analysis, consumers cannot verify whether their protein supplements contain lead.
Recommendations for Protein Powder Use
While occasional use of protein powders is likely safe, daily or frequent consumption could result in unsafe lead intake. Environmental exposures and other dietary sources further influence total lead exposure. Moreover, most Australians already meet protein requirements without supplements.
Whole foods are preferable sources of protein, offering additional nutrients with minimal risk of heavy metals:
- Dairy products: Calcium, vitamin B12
- Fermented dairy: Probiotics in yoghurt and cheese
- Fish: Omega-3 fatty acids
- Red meat: Iron and zinc
- Lentils, beans, nuts: Antioxidants and fiber
Choosing whole foods ensures balanced nutrient intake while reducing exposure to contaminants such as lead.
