Do Collagen Supplements Really Improve Skin Health? What Experts Say

by Shreeya

Collagen supplements have gained popularity as a way to improve skin health and fight signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging. But do they really work? According to Farah Moustafa, MD, a dermatologist and assistant professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, the answer remains uncertain.

“Oral collagen supplements are not currently recommended as a standalone treatment for skin aging,” says Dr. Moustafa. She explains that while some studies suggest that hydrolyzed collagen (a form broken down for easier absorption) may improve skin hydration and elasticity, others show no clear benefit.

The science is mixed, and many studies supporting collagen supplements are low quality or funded by companies with a financial stake in the products.

A recent comprehensive review of 23 randomized controlled trials concluded that higher-quality studies generally found little to no advantage to taking collagen supplements for skin health. The benefit is therefore questionable, especially considering that collagen itself is a large protein and must be broken down into smaller amino acids before the body can absorb it.

How Collagen Works in Your Body

Collagen is a crucial structural protein found in skin, bones, muscles, and connective tissues. It helps give skin its firmness and elasticity. However, as we age, our body’s natural collagen production declines, contributing to wrinkles, sagging, and joint discomfort.

When you digest collagen supplements, your body breaks them down into amino acids, which then enter your bloodstream. There is no guarantee these amino acids will be used specifically to rebuild collagen in your skin. Instead, your body distributes them to wherever they’re most needed.

Safety Concerns and Quality Issues

Another important consideration is the safety and quality of collagen supplements. Products sourced from marine collagen (derived from seafood) carry a risk of contamination with harmful substances like methylmercury. Moreover, many collagen supplements on the market lack rigorous safety testing or third-party verification.

The American Academy of Dermatology warns that most oral collagen products have unclear ingredient labels and inconsistent quality controls. This makes it hard for consumers to know exactly what they are getting or how effective the supplements might be.

Tips for Supporting Skin Health Naturally

Instead of relying solely on supplements, experts recommend adopting lifestyle habits that help your body maintain its own collagen production and skin vitality:

  • Maintain a balanced diet rich in protein, which provides the building blocks for collagen synthesis.
  • Eat vitamin C-rich foods such as strawberries, kiwis, citrus fruits, and red bell peppers, since vitamin C is essential for collagen formation.
  • Protect your skin from UV damage by applying sunscreen daily, as sun exposure accelerates collagen breakdown.
  • Use topical retinol or retinoid products, which have been shown to stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture.
  • Avoid smoking, which damages collagen and speeds up skin aging.
  • Stay hydrated and follow a healthy lifestyle overall.

Conclusion

While oral collagen supplements may seem appealing, current research does not support their widespread use as a reliable solution for skin aging. Focusing on a nutritious diet, sun protection, and proven skincare treatments offers a safer, more effective way to keep your skin healthy and youthful.
