AirPods Pro 3 Hearing Aids: Better Fit and Battery, Still Not a Full Hearing Solution

by Shreeya

The new AirPods Pro 3 offer modest improvements for hearing aid users but still fall short of expectations for fully effective over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. Apple highlights enhanced battery life, a better fit with more ear tip options, and slight sound amplification and clarity upgrades. While these earbuds are a good entry point for people with mild hearing loss who want a multi-functional device, they remain limited compared to specialized OTC hearing aids.

Hearing Aid Features and Setup

Setting up the AirPods Pro 3 is straightforward, requiring the latest iOS version 26.x to access all hearing aid functions. The earbuds come with five different silicone ear tip sizes, helping secure a snug and comfortable fit. The fit and longer battery life—about 8 hours of hearing aid use per charge—are the most notable improvements over the AirPods Pro 2.

Hearing Aid Controls Are Complicated

Apple’s hearing aid controls are spread across multiple Settings menus, making it difficult to manage features like volume, balance, tone, transparency mode, and noise reduction. This scattered layout can frustrate users, especially those less comfortable with technology, and complicates adjusting settings like Live Listen, which can introduce an echo effect.

Hearing Aid Performance and Limitations

The AirPods Pro 3 provide slightly better amplification than their predecessors but still require maximum volume to aid hearing effectively in many cases. Ambient noise reduction remains problematic—loud environments often overpower the earbuds, causing sound to mute or distort. Unlike traditional hearing aids that mix environmental sounds for a more natural experience, the Pro 3’s sealed design and Transparency Mode still deliver an artificial sound, especially with your own voice.

Wind noise is another issue; the earbuds offer no effective way to block it outdoors, limiting their usefulness primarily to quiet, indoor settings.

Battery Life and Use

With about 8 hours of hearing aid battery life, the AirPods Pro 3 exceed the previous generation but still don’t match the “all-day” use provided by many dedicated OTC hearing aids. However, the faster recharge time is a plus for users on the go.

Final Assessment

While the AirPods Pro 3 deliver incremental improvements, they lack the amplification power, ambient noise balance, and intuitive controls that define effective hearing aids. Apple’s decision to reuse the H2 chip from the Pro 2 likely limits these enhancements. Without a chip upgrade, significant hearing aid advancement in this product line may be limited.

Upgrade Advice: Current Pro 2 users may consider upgrading mainly for battery life and fit improvements. New users should view the AirPods Pro 3 as a quality set of earbuds with some hearing aid capabilities, but not a full OTC hearing aid replacement.
