Future Family Appoints New CEO as IVF Demand Rises

In vitro fertilization (IVF) remains one of the most sought-after fertility treatments in the United States. Yet, for many hopeful parents, affordability remains a barrier. A single IVF cycle can cost over $20,000, and many families must undergo more than one cycle before achieving success. Despite this growing need, most insurance plans do not cover fertility care.

How Future Family is addressing the gap

Founded in 2016, Future Family was created to help make fertility treatment more accessible by offering specialized financing options. Instead of facing a large upfront payment, patients can spread out the cost into manageable monthly installments. To date, the company has provided over $200 million in financing to more than 10,000 families across the country.

Beyond financial support, clients also gain access to a nurse coach who provides guidance and answers questions throughout the process. While not a substitute for medical advice, this service is intended to help families navigate the emotional and logistical challenges of IVF.

Leadership change: new CEO appointed

This week, Future Family announced that Alden Romney has been appointed as its new Chief Executive Officer. Romney brings more than 20 years of experience in healthcare, including leadership roles at One Medical and within behavioral health and fertility care businesses. The company’s founder and former CEO, Claire Tomkins, will transition to the role of executive chair.

“What excites me about joining Future Family is the opportunity to expand access and affordability of fertility care,” Romney said. “For many families, this is a deeply emotional journey.”

Founder’s personal journey inspired the company

Tomkins founded Future Family after her own IVF experience, which required multiple rounds. She recalls that, a decade ago, fertility treatment was a subject rarely discussed openly. Drawing from her background in consumer finance, she recognized the need for a lending model tailored to fertility care—similar to loans available for homes, cars, or education.

How the financing works

Future Family partners with more than 600 fertility clinics nationwide, ensuring patients can seamlessly apply financing toward clinical care, medications, and genetic testing. Loans typically range from $20,000 to $50,000, with monthly payments starting at around $300. Interest rates vary from 7.99% to 23.99%, with some borrowers qualifying for zero-interest plans if paid off within 12 months. A unique feature allows patients a 90-day window before interest accrues, giving them time to start their treatment.

New insurance offering

Earlier this year, the company launched what it calls the first nationwide IVF insurance product, “Baby or Your Money Back.” This program allows families to purchase coverage for up to two IVF cycles, with or without medication costs. If treatment is unsuccessful, patients receive a refund of their covered expenses. The product is reinsured, meaning families and providers face no financial risk. To scale this program, Future Family secured $400 million in financing from Clear Haven Capital, which is expected to support up to 20,000 families.

Looking ahead

Future Family’s leadership envisions expanding partnerships with clinics, employers, and payers to make fertility financing and insurance more widely available. “The cost of healthcare is one of the biggest issues facing Americans today,” Tomkins said. “Our mission is to make fertility care affordable and accessible, helping more families build the future they dream of.”
