A new study finds that the presence of common environmental chemicals in the body may significantly impact a woman’s success with in vitro fertilization (IVF). The research adds to growing concerns about how everyday chemical exposures affect reproductive health.
Published in the journal Environment International, the study analyzed ovarian follicular fluid—the liquid that surrounds and nourishes developing eggs—from 82 women undergoing IVF. The findings revealed widespread contamination from a host of synthetic chemicals.
Key Findings:
Pervasive Exposure: Over 90% of the fluid samples contained detectable levels of chemicals from plastics (plasticizers), flame retardants, pesticides, and PFAS (often called “forever chemicals”).
Impact on Egg Retrieval: Researchers linked over 3,000 of the detected chemicals to a lower number of eggs retrieved during the IVF process. The number of eggs retrieved is a critical early indicator of IVF success.
The Mixture Effect: Exposure to mixtures of these chemicals had a greater negative effect than any single chemical alone, suggesting a cumulative impact on ovarian function.
The study’s authors point to these substances as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which can interfere with the body’s hormonal systems.

This research underscores a significant challenge: people are constantly exposed to low levels of countless chemicals through food, water, air, and consumer products like scented items and non-stick cookware. Current regulations typically assess the safety of chemicals one at a time, not in combination, potentially underestimating their real-world health effects.
