UK health chiefs warn: antibiotics won’t help colds and flu

As winter approaches, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a stern reminder: antibiotics are not effective against common colds or influenza.

In a recent post on X, the agency emphasised: “Cold or flu? Antibiotics won’t help you. They fight bacteria, not viruses. Help #KeepAntibioticsWorking by only taking them when needed.” Individuals unsure about whether antibiotics are appropriate are encouraged to seek advice from local pharmacies.

Overusing antibiotics when they are not medically necessary can accelerate antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a pressing global health threat. Pharmacies across England report routine patient requests for antibiotics—even for coughs and colds, which are often viral and self-limiting.

To clear up misconceptions, UKHSA’s “Andi Biotic” campaign, launched in April, delivers three key messages:

  • Don’t take antibiotics for colds or flu—they’re ineffective against viruses.
  • Never save antibiotics for later use.
  • When prescribed, take antibiotics exactly as directed by your healthcare professional.

Public awareness is lagging: a March 2024 Ipsos survey for UKHSA found that while 42% of people expressed concern about antibiotic resistance, 54% either believed there was little they personally could do (26%) or were unsure whether they could contribute (28%).

In pharmacies, this gap is palpable: 79% of pharmacists reported being asked for antibiotics for minor ailments at least once per day, with some patients even hoarding or sharing unused portions—behavior that intensifies resistance risks.

The stakes are high. AMR already contributes to over 35,000 deaths annually in the UK, according to the National Audit Office, and resistant infections have risen 13% since 2018 despite targets to reduce them.

Globally, AMR was directly responsible for 1.14 million deaths in 2021, with projections suggesting as many as 39 million lives could be lost by 2050 if action is not taken.

Health officials stress that with informed behaviour, this alarming trajectory can be changed. Diane Ashiru-Oredope, UKHSA’s lead pharmacist for AMR, underscored that proper prescription use, not saving antibiotics, and avoiding them for viral illnesses protects not just individuals—but entire communities and future generations.

For now, UK residents experiencing cold symptoms are advised to focus on supportive measures: rest, hydration, nutritious food, and simple remedies like steam inhalation or soothing hot lemon-and-honey drinks. For flu, staying warm and hydrated, getting rest, and using paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve fever and aches remain the best initial responses.
