Ultra-Processed Foods Rapidly Reduce Sperm Quality

by Shreeya

A new study reveals that ultra-processed foods can quickly disrupt health—even in young, otherwise healthy men. Over just three weeks, diets high in industrially processed foods led to increased body fat, hormone imbalances, and reduced sperm quality, offering a clear warning about the hidden risks of modern eating habits.

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen, alongside international collaborators, conducted a tightly controlled trial involving 43 men aged 20 to 35. Participants followed two diets for three weeks each: one rich in ultra-processed foods, the other based on unprocessed, whole ingredients. Both diets were carefully matched for calories and macronutrients, ruling out overeating as a factor.

The results were striking. Men consuming ultra-processed foods gained significantly more fat, showed higher cholesterol levels, and experienced increased blood pressure. Hormones essential for reproductive health were also affected: follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) decreased, testosterone trended lower, and sperm motility declined.

Analysis of blood and semen revealed a rise in chemical contaminants, including phthalates—industrial compounds often found in packaging—while essential trace elements like lithium and mercury dropped. Scientists warn that these pollutants may further disrupt metabolism and fertility.

Ultra-processed foods, classified under the NOVA Group 4 system, include snacks, frozen meals, sugary drinks, and other industrially formulated products designed for convenience and long shelf life. Despite their similar calorie content to unprocessed diets, the processed foods alone triggered metabolic and reproductive changes.

“These findings demonstrate that the way food is processed—not just its calorie content—can harm health,” said lead author Jessica Preston. Senior author Romain Barrès added, “The long-term implications are concerning, highlighting the urgent need to reassess dietary guidelines.”

With fertility rates declining worldwide and ultra-processed foods making up a significant portion of modern diets, this study underscores the importance of prioritizing whole, minimally processed foods to protect both metabolic and reproductive health.
