The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned of a “near-total collapse” of Gaza’s health sector, leaving children especially vulnerable to disease and lack of medical care.
According to UNICEF regional spokesperson Salim Owais, only 18 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remain partially functional after hundreds of strikes damaged or destroyed medical facilities. Severe shortages of medicines, equipment, and essential supplies are crippling the remaining hospitals’ ability to respond to urgent needs.
Public health risks are escalating as clean water becomes scarce and sewage systems deteriorate, fueling the spread of skin infections, viral hepatitis, and meningitis among the population.
Owais emphasized that current humanitarian aid falls far short of requirements, while security and logistical barriers continue to prevent timely delivery of assistance. He stressed that the situation is “extremely difficult” for children, whose health and safety are now at critical risk.
