A wellness trend sweeping Miami is putting a new spin on relaxation: paying up to $130 for professional back, scalp, and arm scratches.
Scratcher Girls, a family-run brand based in Miami Gardens, markets itself as the first studio dedicated to “professional back scratching.” The company also operates a weekend booth at Hollywood’s Yellow Green Farmers Market, drawing clients in search of what it calls “mood-enhancing scratch therapy.”
Rates start at $74.99 for a 30-minute session and $129.99 for a full hour. Couples packages are also available, with clients expected to arrive clean. For those requesting “hair play,” staff conduct a scalp check before the service begins.
The unusual practice has stirred debate. Fox News host Tomi Lahren dismissed it as “a very weird thing” during an Aug. 29 broadcast, while fellow panelist Emily Compagno quipped that her attorney instincts saw “DNA transfer” risks. Others, however, pointed to the service’s potential mental health benefits. “There is science that backs the dopamine release and what it does to your mental health and your relaxation,” said co-host Tiffany Smiley.
Much of the trend’s momentum comes from social media. Scratcher Girls has amassed a large following on TikTok with ASMR-inspired videos, transforming the gentle act of scratching into viral content. ASMR — or autonomous sensory meridian response — is described by the National Institutes of Health as a previously unstudied phenomenon that can trigger tingling sensations in response to certain sights and sounds.
The company promotes “over 20 years of experience” and has embraced the buzz with market pop-ups and a summer tour designed to let newcomers sample the service. Despite the skepticism, the back-scratching business is proving there’s an audience for unconventional paths to relaxation.
