Landmarks across Australia will be illuminated in blue throughout September to highlight the impact of prostate cancer, the nation’s most commonly diagnosed cancer, and to encourage men to take proactive steps in early detection.
Iconic sites including Brisbane’s Story Bridge, Adelaide Oval, the Victory Theatre in Geraldton, and Darwin Civic Centre will participate in the campaign, led by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
“A staggering one in five Australian men are likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, with 72 men newly diagnosed every day,” PCFA Chief Executive Anne Savage said. “Yet awareness remains lower compared to other major cancers.”
The “Light Up Blue” initiative aims to spark conversation about prostate cancer, promote early testing, and show solidarity with men and families affected by the disease.
The campaign coincides with PCFA’s national fundraising effort, The Long Run, which has already attracted more than 3,000 participants pledging to run, walk, or cycle 72 kilometers during September in support of men’s health.
Savage emphasized that early detection is critical, noting that only 36 percent of prostate cancer cases in Australia are diagnosed at Stage One, when treatment is most effective.
“Our first line of defence is a simple, non-invasive PSA blood test,” she said. “We recommend all men establish a baseline PSA test at age 40 and work with their GP on a routine testing plan based on individual risks and family history. If prostate cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is 100 percent.”
The foundation is urging men aged 40 and over to talk with their doctors about prostate cancer risk and screening options this month.
