Tidelands Health offers new minimally invasive enlarged prostate treatment

by Shreeya

Tidelands Health is now offering men a minimally invasive procedure designed to relieve the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, a common condition that affects millions.

The treatment, known as aquablation, is used to address benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The condition, often referred to as an enlarged prostate, affects roughly half of men by the age of 60.

BPH can significantly disrupt daily life, causing frequent urination, a weak urine stream, difficulty emptying the bladder, and nighttime awakenings to use the restroom. Traditionally, treatment options have included medication or surgery, depending on severity.

Aquablation offers an alternative. The procedure removes excess prostate tissue with a precision water jet guided by a robotic system and real-time ultrasound imaging. Unlike traditional surgical methods that use heat, aquablation avoids thermal damage, lowering the risk of sexual side effects. The technique can be used effectively across a wide range of prostate sizes.

“Men should know there are very effective and minimally invasive surgical options for their urinary condition that provide symptom relief and can eliminate the need for medications,” said Dr. Lauren Cooley, urologist and urological oncology specialist at Tidelands Health Urology. “Aquablation therapy is an effective treatment that preserves sexual function. When it comes to BPH, men need to remember that it’s treatable.”

Dr. Cooley urges men experiencing urinary symptoms to seek evaluation, emphasizing that they do not have to accept discomfort as a normal part of aging.

“Your life doesn’t have to revolve around going to the restroom,” she said. “Our care team can help determine the best treatment to improve your quality of life.”
