Experts Share Safe Practices for Pumping and Storing Breast Milk

by Shreeya

Breastfeeding provides critical benefits for infants, including optimal nutrition, immune support, and emotional bonding. For parents who rely on pumping, safely handling and storing breast milk is essential.

“Parents often feel nervous about food safety when handling and storing their breast milk,” said Dr. Patricia Campbell, pediatrician and lactation consultant at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Fortunately, authoritative organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provide accessible, evidence-based guidelines for safe breast milk handling, Dr. Campbell added.

Expert Recommendations for Pumping and Storing Breast Milk:

Hand hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly before pumping. Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water aren’t available.

Use appropriate containers: Choose clean, food-grade containers or breast milk storage bags; avoid food bags or bottle liners.

Label carefully: Include the date of pumping and the baby’s name if sending milk to childcare.

Single-use bags only: Never reuse storage bags.

Sanitize bottles: Clean and sanitize all bottles after each use.

Separate storage: Keep fresh and frozen milk apart, and discard leftover milk after feeding instead of reheating.

Safe Storage Guidelines (Children’s Hospital Los Angeles):

Room temperature (up to 77°F / 25°C): Up to 4 hours

Cooler with ice packs: Up to 24 hours

Refrigerator (fresh or thawed, 40°F / 4°C): Up to 48 hours

Home freezer (0°F / -18°C): Up to 3 months

Deep freezer (-4°F / -20°C): 6–12 months

Once thawed, breast milk should be used within 24 hours and should never be refrozen. The safest thawing methods include refrigerating the milk or swirling the container in a bowl of warm water. Avoid microwaving or boiling, which can overheat the milk and destroy nutrients.
