More women in the U.S. are embracing reusable menstrual products—including cups, discs, and period underwear—driven by concerns over cost, convenience, and environmental impact.
Americans discard roughly 19 billion single-use menstrual products annually, with plastic pads taking centuries to decompose in landfills. Reusable options such as menstrual cups and discs can be worn for up to 12 hours, reduce the risk of toxic shock syndrome, and often pay for themselves within a few months.
“There’s an ease of use there for the modern woman that is significantly better than traditional methods,” said Selin Celikoyar, a menstrual disc user.
However, challenges remain. Learning to use these products correctly, cleaning them in public restrooms, and potential complications for individuals with IUDs are notable barriers.
Menstrual products are essential for millions, yet most store-bought options remain disposable and plastic-heavy, contributing to microplastic pollution in soil and water. Reusable alternatives—including silicone cups and period underwear—offer lower-waste solutions, though adoption has been slow due to cultural norms, cost, and practical concerns.
Experts note that while reusable products can reduce waste and limit exposure to irritating materials, some items may contain harmful chemicals like PFAS, highlighting the need for stricter safety regulations.
Small changes in consumer habits, however, could significantly reduce global plastic waste while providing a safer, more sustainable approach to menstrual care.
