Bismarck residents now have access to a cutting-edge surgical procedure that helps men restore normal urination without relying on lifelong catheters.
The procedure, called Aquablation, treats benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition commonly known as an enlarged prostate. Unlike traditional methods that use heat, Aquablation employs a robot-guided, high-pressure water jet to remove prostate tissue obstructing urine flow. This technique reduces the risk of heat-related complications and aims to preserve sexual function.
For many local men, severe prostate enlargement can make urination difficult or impossible, leading to weak urine streams, infections, and frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom.
“About half of these men actually can’t urinate, and they have a catheter because they can’t pee,” said Dr. Robert Fisher, a board-certified urologist at CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck. “This new procedure opens up the part of the prostate that’s blocking urine flow.”
Aquablation is performed under anesthesia and typically takes about an hour. Most patients stay overnight, although some may go home the same day. Recovery is usually swift, with most men resuming normal activities within one to two weeks. Temporary burning during urination is common, and doctors advise avoiding heavy lifting for one to two weeks.
Previously, Bismarck-area patients had to travel to other cities for Aquablation. Current North Dakota providers include Altru Health System in Grand Forks and McKenzie Health in Watford City, which was the first in the state to offer the next-generation Hydros robotic system. Sanford Health is not listed as a provider.
Dr. Fisher confirmed that he is now accepting new patients. On September 3, CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck plans to perform six Aquablation procedures in a single day, potentially setting a new state record.
