A new systematic review published in Frontiers in Pharmacology highlights ginger (Zingiber officinale) as a potent natural agent for reducing blood sugar and inflammation.
Researchers from Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine and Mercer University School of Medicine analyzed five high-quality meta-analyses to evaluate ginger’s clinical effects on type 2 diabetes (T2D), inflammation, oxidative stress, and pregnancy-associated nausea and vomiting (NVP).
The review found that ginger supplementation significantly lowers fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), key markers for long-term diabetes management.
It also reduces critical inflammatory markers, including C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), while improving antioxidant status.
Although ginger effectively alleviates nausea during pregnancy, it was less effective than vitamin B6 for overall NVP symptom control and did not significantly reduce vomiting episodes.
Key Findings
Inflammation: Ginger significantly lowered CRP (MD = -5.11), high-sensitivity CRP (MD = -0.88), and TNF-α (MD = -0.85), though high heterogeneity (I² > 89%) limits the conclusiveness of some results.
Blood Sugar Control: Supplementation reduced fasting blood glucose by 21.24 mg/dL and HbA1c by 1.00 percentage point, with low heterogeneity supporting the reliability of these findings.
Antioxidant Effects: Ginger lowered malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (MD = -1.45) and increased glutathione peroxidase activity (MD = 1.93), but total antioxidant capacity was not significantly affected.
Pregnancy Nausea: Ginger significantly reduced nausea (P = 0.0002), but its effect on vomiting was inconsistent. Vitamin B6 outperformed ginger in overall NVP symptom improvement, although both were comparably effective for vomiting control. Side effects such as belching were more common with ginger.
Typical supplementation ranged from 500–1,500 mg daily for NVP and 1–3 g daily for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antidiabetic effects, revealing variability in dosing across studies.
Conclusions
The systematic review confirms that ginger is generally safe and demonstrates meaningful therapeutic potential. It supports ginger’s use as an anti-inflammatory, adjunct therapy for T2D, antioxidant, and remedy for pregnancy-related nausea.
However, inconsistent effects on vomiting, study heterogeneity, and variations in dosage highlight the need for additional high-quality trials. Future research is essential to define standardized dosing, optimal delivery methods, and target populations.
