China Unveils Plan to Boost Brain-Computer Interface Industry by 2027

Seven Chinese ministries, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Education, have jointly issued a new policy to promote the innovative development of the brain-computer interface (BCI) industry, it was learned on the 7th. The plan sets a target for 2027: achieving breakthroughs in key BCI technologies and initially establishing advanced technical, industrial, and standard systems.

Brain-computer interface, a cutting-edge technology integrating life sciences and information sciences, creates an information channel between the brain and machines to enable collaborative interaction between biological and artificial intelligence. Currently, with continuous innovation and rapid industrial growth, BCI is poised for disruptive breakthroughs, emerging as a key field where technological and industrial innovation deeply converge. The policy focuses on enhancing the industry’s innovation capacity through forward-looking planning and policy guidance to accelerate the development of this future industrial track.

The plan outlines two major phases. By 2027, BCI products are expected to see wider application in industrial manufacturing, healthcare, and consumer sectors. The industry scale will expand significantly, with 2-3 industrial clusters established and new scenarios, models, and business forms developed. By 2030, the industry’s innovation capability will be notably strengthened, forming a safe and reliable industrial system, while nurturing 2-3 globally influential leading enterprises and a group of specialized, sophisticated, distinctive, and novel small and medium-sized enterprises.

Key tasks outlined in the plan include: stepping up efforts to tackle core hardware and software technologies; breaking down industry application barriers to accelerate the commercialization of innovations; building testing and verification platforms to improve product application detection capabilities; fostering leading enterprises in the BCI field; and supporting SMEs in providing innovative solutions.

Industry insiders note that the policy provides clear direction for BCI development, which is expected to drive cross-disciplinary collaboration and attract more resources to this emerging sector, solidifying China’s position in the global race for advancements in brain-computer interface technology.
