Science Secretary Peter Kyle has revealed plans to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) in identifying hidden cases of prostate cancer, part of a broader £168 million government investment to enhance public data usage and improve NHS cancer screening.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Kyle outlined that a key focus of the funding is a £10 million initiative led by Cancer Research UK.
This project aims to develop AI-powered tools to predict cancer risk by analyzing health records, demographics, family history, and behavioral data, with the goal of enabling personalized screening for high-risk individuals—potentially saving thousands of lives annually.
The announcement aligns with The Telegraph’s campaign advocating for a targeted national prostate cancer screening program, which prioritizes men over 50, Black men (who face twice the risk of white men), and those with a family history of the disease.
High-profile figures such as Steve McQueen, Bob Willis, and Chris Hoy have recently been diagnosed, highlighting the urgency: around 55,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in England each year, and approximately 33 die from it daily.
Kyle drew parallels to the success of BRCA1 genetic screening, which gained global attention—dubbed the “Angelina Jolie gene” after the actress underwent a preventive double mastectomy in 2013—and now enables early detection in high-risk groups like Jewish women. “This next generation of data-driven screening could revolutionize prostate cancer management, just as BRCA screening did for hereditary breast cancer,” he said.
The five-year project will merge disparate datasets to create flexible screening programs, ensuring earlier detection in individuals who might otherwise be diagnosed too late. Antonis Antoniou, professor of cancer risk prediction at the University of Cambridge, noted, “The UK’s strength in population-scale data, paired with AI, can uncover clues for earlier cancer detection and prevention.”
Dr. David Crosby, head of prevention research at Cancer Research UK, emphasized the critical need for early detection: “With 500,000 annual UK cancer cases projected by 2040, we need more accurate early diagnosis. This program will equip doctors to prioritize high-risk individuals.”
The £168 million investment extends beyond cancer care, funding the Administrative Data Partnership (ADR UK) through 2031 to integrate data across sectors like justice, education, and health. It will also inform a new national data library, streamlining secure data access for policymakers.
In a joint article with Economic and Social Research Council executive chairman Stian Westlake, Kyle stressed, “Data is the bedrock of effective policy. By linking health records to lifestyle factors, we can target support where it matters most—saving lives and building an NHS fit for the future.”
