New Research Suggests Depression May Spread Among Peers

When it comes to contagious diseases, the transmission of physical illnesses like colds, measles, or the flu is well understood. But could mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety disorders also spread through social contact?

This intriguing question has sparked scientific investigation, with recent large-scale studies from Scandinavia offering fresh insights — although the idea remains controversial.

Two major studies, one conducted in Finland and another in Denmark, have sparked particular interest. Both used extensive population data to explore how mental health diagnoses might cluster within social groups such as school classes or workplaces.

The Finnish research, led by psychologist Jussi Alho from the University of Helsinki, analyzed data from more than 700,000 students beginning in ninth grade.

They found that students who had classmates diagnosed with mental health disorders were at increased risk of being diagnosed themselves in subsequent years. Particularly notable was the apparent susceptibility to conditions like eating disorders and anxiety disorders.

Similarly, a Danish study led by Carina Lomberg at the Technical University of Denmark analyzed records from 250,000 employees across 17,000 companies. Their results suggested that mental illness diagnoses increased in companies that recently hired workers from companies with higher prevalence of mental health issues.

Managers who themselves had mental health struggles or came from such companies were identified as key “carriers” within workplace social networks, given their influence and broad interactions with employees.

These studies suggest a kind of “contagion” effect where mental illness might spread through social exposure, much like an epidemic — but this interpretation is not universally accepted.

Critics urge caution, noting these findings show correlation rather than causation. Andreas Bjerre-Nielsen, professor of social data science at the University of Copenhagen, points out that factors beyond social exposure might explain the clustering of diagnoses.

For example, students in the same class might share similar socioeconomic backgrounds, environmental stressors, or other risk factors not directly related to interaction with mentally ill peers. Likewise, increased diagnosis rates could reflect greater awareness or willingness to seek help when peers are openly struggling.

To address these complexities, a newer, more rigorous study from Norway is analyzing data from 230,000 teenagers aged 16 to 19. Preliminary results, reviewed by Bjerre-Nielsen and presented at academic conferences, seem to provide stronger evidence for a genuine contagion effect. Julian Johnsen, one of the lead researchers, highlights that the study carefully controlled for socioeconomic influences and other confounding factors.

Interestingly, the Norwegian study found that classes with higher numbers of students diagnosed with mental illness did not show improved academic performance — contradicting the theory that increased awareness and treatment lead to better outcomes. Instead, academic performance tended to decline, suggesting a more direct impact of peer mental health on others.

Nevertheless, the observed contagion effect is modest in scale. For instance, if 4% of students have a psychiatric diagnosis, the likelihood of their classmates also seeking mental health care is about 23.7%. If this percentage rises to 10%, the chance only slightly increases to 24.4%, representing a small but statistically significant difference.

One challenge in studying mental illness contagion is the rarity of comprehensive data linking health records with social environments — a type of analysis mostly feasible in Scandinavian countries due to their unique data policies. Privacy regulations in other countries often make such studies impossible.

In conclusion, while mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety may show patterns consistent with social contagion, they do not spread with the ease or speed of infectious diseases like the common cold.

The mechanisms involved are complex, influenced by social, environmental, and psychological factors. Further research will help clarify how mental health conditions influence one another within communities, potentially shaping better prevention and support strategies.
