Qilu Hospital Uncovers Cardiovascular Mechanisms

A research team from Qilu Hospital of Shandong University’s National Key Laboratory for Innovation and Translation of Collateral Disease Theory has made significant findings in cardiovascular disease research, publishing a series of papers in top journals like Cell Metabolism, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Metabolism-Clinical and Experimental.

Their study on aspartame, a common artificial sweetener, found it promotes atherosclerotic plaque formation and instability in mice and monkeys by triggering insulin secretion independent of blood sugar levels. This insulin-dependent pathway enhances vascular inflammation, though human applicability needs verification.

Another study identified TRIB3 as a regulator of vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, linking it to endoplasmic reticulum stress and inflammatory processes, offering new targets for treatment.

Research on obesity revealed that reduced ZFP36 protein in adipose tissue exacerbates obesity and insulin resistance via the ZFP36/RNF128/Sirt1 pathway, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for metabolic diseases.

All studies, led by Qilu Hospital researchers, provide fresh insights into cardiovascular and metabolic disorder mechanisms, drawing international academic attention.
