Y Chromosome Loss Linked to Major Health Risks in Men

New research reveals that the Y chromosome, which determines biological maleness, can degrade over time — and that loss may harm men’s long-term health in serious ways. Scientists say this gradual disappearance, known as “loss of Y” (LOY), may help explain why men are more prone to age-related diseases.

Y Chromosome Loss Is Common in Aging Men

Humans usually have 23 pairs of chromosomes, including one pair of sex chromosomes. Typically, biological males have one X and one Y chromosome, while biological females have two X chromosomes.

But the Y chromosome is much smaller and carries far fewer genes than the X. Researchers now say that as men age, the Y chromosome can begin to vanish from some of their cells.

This process, they explain, isn’t rare. “It’s not some freakish accident,” said Lars Forsberg, a genetics expert from Uppsala University in Sweden. “It’s enormously common.”

Y Chromosome Loss Tied to Cancer, Heart Disease, and Dementia

A recent study published in Nature Reviews Genetics found that LOY plays a key role in weakening the immune system. As the Y chromosome disappears, immune cells become less effective, making it easier for diseases like cancer, heart problems, and infections to take hold.

LOY has also been linked to faster growth of tumors. Cancer cells missing the Y chromosome produce proteins that exhaust T cells — the immune cells that normally fight cancer.

The risks go beyond cancer. Scientists have also found strong links between LOY and Alzheimer’s disease. When immune cells without the Y chromosome enter the brain, they may cause more inflammation, or fail to control it properly. This type of inflammation is a known trait of Alzheimer’s.

“If you’re a male, you do not want to lose your Y chromosome,” said Kenneth Walsh, a professor at the University of Virginia. “It’s definitely going to shorten your life.”

Environmental Toxins May Speed Up the Process

LOY happens mainly because of small mistakes during cell division — a normal process that becomes more frequent with age. But environmental factors can make it worse. Smoking, air pollution, and exposure to certain chemicals such as glyphosate (a common herbicide) and arsenic-contaminated water may all increase the chances of losing the Y chromosome.

Quitting smoking could reduce the risk, researchers say. In the future, they hope to find specific genes or triggers that cause LOY, which may help doctors prevent or slow it down.

A Genetic Reason Women Live Longer?

Scientists are beginning to see LOY as a warning sign of broader genetic damage and a marker of how the environment affects our bodies. It may also help explain why women, who don’t carry a Y chromosome, tend to live longer and suffer fewer age-related illnesses.

“Females seem to be the stronger sex from a genetic point of view,” the study noted, pointing out that women have more stable DNA and lower rates of certain diseases.

Could the Y Chromosome Eventually Disappear?

While LOY currently occurs at the individual level, scientists believe the Y chromosome might be weakening over time on an evolutionary scale too. Some researchers even suggest it could vanish entirely in the distant future.

For now, scientists are urging men to be aware of LOY and take steps to reduce the risks. That includes avoiding harmful substances, quitting smoking, and staying informed about new research.

“It’s not something men can feel or notice,” experts say, “but it’s something that could be quietly shaping their health.”
