UK Pregnant Women Missing Vital Nutrients, Study Warns

by Shreeya

A new report from the Nutrition Bulletin highlights a growing health concern for expectant mothers in the UK: widespread nutrient deficiencies that could affect both maternal and infant health.

Despite national dietary guidelines, many pregnant women are not getting enough essential nutrients like folic acid, vitamin D, iron, and iodine. Only 19.7% take the recommended folic acid supplement before pregnancy, and shortfalls in vitamin D and iodine are also common—even though they play a crucial role in fetal development, especially in the early weeks of pregnancy.

The study found vulnerable groups—including teenagers, women from lower-income households, ethnic minorities, smokers, and those with multiple pregnancies—are especially at risk. Inconsistent delivery of nutritional advice from health professionals and varying international guidelines contribute to public confusion.

Although plant-based diets are becoming more popular and can support a healthy pregnancy when well-managed, they can also fall short in key nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, calcium, and DHA. The study recommends the use of fortified foods and targeted supplementation to close these gaps.

Over 20% of UK women begin pregnancy with obesity, and poor weight management—either gaining too little or too much—raises the risk of complications like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm birth.

The British Nutrition Foundation urges healthcare providers and policymakers to offer consistent, culturally appropriate nutritional advice. This includes:

  • Promoting nutrient-dense foods over eating more
  • Monitoring pre-pregnancy weight and gestational gain
  • Educating about safe food choices (e.g., limiting caffeine and avoiding certain meats and cheeses)
  • Advising plant-based eaters on supplements like B12 and algal DHA
  • Emphasizing the importance of alcohol avoidance even before conception

Ultimately, this “teachable moment” of pregnancy is an opportunity to improve long-term health for both mothers and children—starting with better nutrition.
