PFAS Chemicals May Affect Boys’ Brain Development, Study Finds

A new study has raised concerns about a common type of “forever chemical” — PFHxA — and its impact on developing male brains. Researchers have discovered that prenatal exposure to this chemical may increase the risk of behavioral problems similar to those seen in neurodevelopmental conditions like autism and ADHD, which already affect boys more than girls.

Male Brains More Vulnerable to Chemical Exposure

The study, published in the European Journal of Neuroscience, found that male mice exposed to PFHxA in the womb showed long-term changes in behavior. These included lower activity levels, increased anxiety, and memory problems — symptoms that mirror traits found in some boys with autism. Female mice exposed to the same chemical showed no such changes.

“This finding suggests that the male brain might be more vulnerable to environmental insults during neurodevelopment,” said Ania Majewska, a neuroscience professor at the University of Rochester.

Why This Matters

PFHxA is a short-chain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance), a group of synthetic compounds often used to make products water- and stain-resistant. While long-chain PFAS have been banned or phased out in many places, PFHxA is still commonly used in everyday products like food packaging, clothing, cookware, and cosmetics. It has even been detected in beer.

Until recently, PFHxA was considered a “safer” alternative to older PFAS compounds. But this study suggests that replacing one chemical with another may not eliminate the health risks — especially when it comes to children’s development.

“Finding that developmental exposure to PFHxA has long-term behavioral consequences in a mammalian model is concerning,” said study lead author Elizabeth Plunk. “We need more research to evaluate the neurotoxicity of PFHxA.”

PFAS: The “Forever Chemicals”

PFAS are called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment or the human body. Over 4,700 types of PFAS exist, and they’ve been linked to a range of health problems, including:

  • Increased risk of some cancers
  • Fertility issues
  • Liver damage
  • Developmental delays in children

These substances are widespread and have been detected in soil, water, and even human blood. Although governments around the world have started regulating PFAS use, many of the newer “short-chain” types, like PFHxA, remain underregulated and under-researched.

Call for More Research and Regulation

Experts say this new study is just the beginning. More in-depth studies are needed to understand exactly how PFHxA affects brain development, especially in regions responsible for movement, memory, and emotions.

“This work points to the need for more research in short-chain PFAS,” said Majewska. “Future studies should explore how these chemicals affect different types of brain cells to understand the underlying mechanisms.”

Practical Advice for Families

While more research is underway, families can take practical steps to limit PFAS exposure:

  • Choose PFAS-free products when shopping for cookware, clothing, and personal care items
  • Avoid fast food packaging and microwave popcorn bags that may contain PFAS
  • Use water filters that are certified to remove PFAS
  • Check labels for ingredients like PTFE, PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxA

Limiting PFAS exposure is especially important during pregnancy and early childhood, when the brain is most vulnerable to disruption.
