New research reveals that certain childhood health issues may increase men’s risk of chronic diseases later in life. Boys who were overweight in early childhood or had chickenpox or other infections as infants showed signs of a hormone reduction linked to future health problems.
Scientists at the University of Nottingham studied a hormone called insulin-like peptide 3 (INSL3) in men aged 24. This hormone is important for testicular function and overall health, including hormone production. Lower levels of INSL3 have been connected to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, bone weakness, and sexual health issues.
The study showed that boys who were overweight during childhood or early teens, or who had infectious diseases like chickenpox in infancy, had 10 to 15% lower INSL3 levels as young adults. This reduction may increase their risk of developing chronic illnesses later in life.
Led by Dr. Ravinder Anand-Ivell, the research analyzed long-term health data from the “Children of the Nineties” study, which tracked children from birth into adulthood. The findings highlight the importance of healthy weight and infection prevention in early life for protecting men’s health in the future.
Dr. Anand-Ivell explained, “INSL3 levels reflect testicular health and testosterone production, which are essential for male wellbeing. Our study shows that childhood health factors influence these hormone levels and later life health risks.”
Professor Richard Ivell added that the new biomarker could help identify men at risk early on, enabling preventive care before diseases develop. The next step is creating a clinical test to measure INSL3 routinely and support healthy aging in men.
