A major new study has found that exposure to bright light at night may significantly raise the risk of developing serious heart conditions. Researchers from the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute, together with colleagues from the UK and U.S., have discovered that people exposed to higher levels of night light are more likely to develop five major cardiovascular diseases.
The research, which analyzed data from over 88,000 participants in the UK Biobank, shows that bright nighttime light may disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythms—internal processes that help regulate blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar, hormone levels, and other essential functions.
