Republican Health Law Could Raise Costs and Reduce Care for Millions

by Shreeya

A new Republican tax and spending bill, soon to be signed by President Trump, will cut federal health funding by about $1 trillion over 10 years. These cuts are expected to reduce health coverage for nearly 12 million Americans by 2034, mainly by limiting Medicaid and Affordable Care Act (ACA) assistance. This could increase health costs, reduce care access, and strain hospitals and clinics, especially in rural areas.

Key Health Impacts:

Medicaid Work Requirements: Millions of Medicaid recipients will need to prove they work, volunteer, or attend school to keep coverage. This may cause many to lose health insurance, especially those who struggle with paperwork rather than employment itself.

Funding Cuts Threaten Rural Health: The bill reduces a key funding tool called “provider taxes” that helps rural hospitals and nursing homes stay open and provide services. While the Senate added $50 billion to help rural hospitals, many may still face closures or cutbacks.

Harder ACA Enrollment: People with Obamacare plans will face tougher rules to enroll and renew coverage, including shorter enrollment periods and more paperwork, likely causing more uninsured Americans.

Higher Costs for Medicaid Users: Some Medicaid recipients will have to pay up to $35 for certain medical visits, a change that could lead low-income patients to skip needed care.

Cuts for Lawfully Present Immigrants: Subsidies that help many legally present immigrants afford health insurance will be reduced, risking loss of coverage for hundreds of thousands and increasing premiums for others.

Overall, the new law is expected to raise health costs and reduce access to care for millions of Americans, reversing coverage gains made in recent years.
