Health Breakthrough: Adult Brains Can Regenerate New Cells, Study Finds

For decades, scientists have debated whether the adult human brain can generate new neurons. Now, a new study may have finally settled the question—with strong evidence showing that adult brains continue to produce new brain cells, reshaping our understanding of aging, memory, and recovery.

New Brain Cells Found in Adults of All Ages

Published in the journal Science, the international research team analyzed brain samples from people aged 0 to 78. Using powerful new technologies—like single-nucleus RNA sequencing, fluorescent imaging, and machine learning algorithms—researchers identified dividing neural stem cells in the hippocampus, the brain’s memory and emotion center.

Crucially, these precursor cells were seen not just in children, but also in teens and adults, suggesting neurogenesis continues well into adulthood.

“Our work puts to rest the long-standing debate about whether adult human brains can grow new neurons,” said study co-author Marta Paterlini of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

What This Means for Brain Health

The discovery carries huge health implications. The hippocampus is critical to learning, memory, and emotional resilience. If adult brains can create new neurons, it may:

  • Support lifelong learning
  • Help the brain recover from injury
  • Offer clues to delay or prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia

Dr. W. Taylor Kimberly of Massachusetts General Brigham, who was not part of the study, says the next step is understanding what triggers this neurogenesis—and whether it occurs as a defense against disease or as a sign of healthy brain aging.

How the Discovery Was Made

Researchers studied over 400,000 brain cell nuclei from 24 individuals and analyzed 10 more brains with advanced imaging techniques. The biggest challenges in past studies were due to fragile tissue quality and limited visibility of new cells in adult brains.

By using fluorescent tags, the team tracked immature brain cells as they developed. A machine learning model trained on rodent data helped confirm that these were indeed new, growing neurons.

Among the adult brains studied:

  • 9 out of 14 showed signs of neurogenesis with one method
  • 10 out of 10 showed neurogenesis with a second, more sensitive method

Still More to Learn

While children’s brains produced the most new neurons, adults still showed neurogenesis—though some adult brains did not. Researchers caution against overinterpreting these variations, as many external factors (like health, environment, or disease) could affect neurogenesis.

Dr. Rajiv Ratan, CEO of the Burke Neurological Institute, called the research a pivotal step toward possible treatments that use this regenerative ability to fight neurological disorders.
