Recreational Anglers Catch Billions More Fish Than Previously Estimated in the U.S.

A new study reveals that recreational freshwater anglers in the United States catch far more fish than official records suggest. Researchers found that anglers across lakes, ponds, and reservoirs in the lower 48 states catch between 2 billion and 6 billion fish annually.

Even after accounting for catch-and-release practices, the study estimates that Americans keep between 230,000 and 670,000 metric tons of fish each year. These figures are 17 to 48 times higher than previous U.S. estimates reported to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization.

The research highlights the significant role of recreational fishing in the nation’s fish consumption. The retained catch accounts for roughly 20 percent of the total annual consumption of fresh, unfrozen fish in the U.S., underscoring the economic and dietary impact of non-commercial fishing.

In monetary terms, the recreational fishery is valued at approximately $3 billion per year, compared with $12 billion for domestic commercial processed fishery products. This shows that recreational fishing contributes meaningfully to both local economies and food supply chains.

The study draws on thousands of recreational fishing surveys, combining data to provide a more comprehensive view of the United States’ freshwater fishing landscape. By revealing the scale of recreational angling, the research challenges assumptions about the relative contribution of recreational and commercial fisheries.

Experts emphasize that understanding recreational catch is critical for fishery management, conservation planning, and maintaining sustainable freshwater ecosystems. Accurate data can help balance ecological health with public access to fishing opportunities.
