2028 Chevrolet Camaro Return Confirmed with Available V8, RWD Platform, and New Alpha 2 Architecture

The Chevrolet Camaro is set to make a comeback for the 2028 model year, reviving the iconic nameplate after a brief hiatus and re-entering the competitive American muscle car segment alongside the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger. The next-generation model is expected to blend traditional rear-wheel-drive performance with updated architecture and a modernized lineup of internal-combustion engines, including an available V-8.

The revived Camaro is expected to remain a two-door sports coupe at its core, while also potentially expanding its body style offerings. Reports suggest Chevrolet may consider a four-door variant similar to the latest Dodge Charger. Regardless of configuration, the model will likely retain its 2+2 seating layout, with rear seats designed primarily for occasional use rather than long-distance comfort. Styling is expected to shift toward a fastback silhouette with a sloping roofline and hatchback-style rear access, drawing inspiration from earlier Camaro generations.

The model’s return follows GM’s decision to discontinue the Camaro after the 2024 model year, which left a notable gap in Chevrolet’s performance lineup. With the Corvette now positioned as the brand’s entry-level sports car at a significantly higher price point, the Camaro’s revival is seen as a move to restore a more accessible performance option while reinforcing GM’s commitment to combustion-engine performance.

Underpinnings for the new Camaro are expected to come from an updated Alpha 2 platform, an evolution of the architecture used in the previous Camaro as well as Cadillac’s CT4 and CT5 sedans. The same platform is also anticipated to support future Cadillac and Buick models. While earlier speculation pointed to a different rear-drive architecture, current expectations suggest GM will refine and expand the existing Alpha platform rather than replace it entirely. The Camaro is expected to remain rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive also considered a possibility to improve traction in colder markets and broaden its appeal.

Powertrain options are expected to include a turbocharged inline-four as the base engine, likely derived from GM’s existing 2.7-liter unit used in other Alpha-based vehicles. This entry-level setup would help keep the Camaro competitively priced while targeting rivals such as the four-cylinder Ford Mustang. Higher trims are expected to feature a V-8 engine, potentially the upcoming 6.7-liter LS6 small-block unit, which is expected to deliver more than 500 horsepower in related applications. High-performance variants, including successors to the SS or ZL1, are also likely, with possible adoption of Corvette-derived V-8 technology.

Transmission choices are expected to include a 10-speed automatic, while a six-speed manual remains a strong possibility given its continued availability in other GM performance models. A V-6 option appears unlikely as Chevrolet aims to streamline the lineup. An all-electric Camaro is also not anticipated, as GM appears focused on maintaining internal-combustion performance in this segment amid mixed market reception to competing electric muscle cars.

The Camaro will compete directly with the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger, while also appealing to shoppers considering performance models such as the Nissan Z and BMW M2. Its success will depend heavily on balancing performance, pricing, and design appeal in a shrinking but highly competitive sports coupe market.

Production is expected to take place at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan, with manufacturing slated to begin in late 2027 ahead of a 2028 model year launch. Pricing is expected to remain relatively accessible for a performance car, with base models likely starting around $40,000 and V-8 variants exceeding $50,000.
