Mercedes-Benz Pledges $4 Billion Investment to Expand Alabama SUV Manufacturing Plant

by Shreeya

Mercedes-Benz has announced a major $4 billion investment in its manufacturing plant located in Vance, Alabama. This significant commitment aims to boost the production of SUVs at the facility and is part of the company’s broader strategy to increase its U.S. vehicle sales by 28% by the year 2030. The announcement was made during a celebratory event where the automaker also unveiled new models of its popular GLE and GLS SUVs, which will be exclusively produced at the Alabama plant.

The Vance facility holds a special place in Mercedes-Benz’s history as it was the site of the company’s first U.S. manufacturing plant, established in 1993. Since then, it has become a cornerstone of Alabama’s automotive industry, producing more than five million vehicles to date. Approximately 5,800 employees currently work at the plant, which exports nearly 60% of its production globally, showcasing Alabama-made luxury vehicles on international roads.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, who has a personal connection to the Alabama plant having once led its operations, emphasized the importance of this investment as both a business decision and a tribute to the dedication of the local workforce. “These vehicles don’t just carry the Mercedes star. They carry the passion, precision and pride of an entire region,” Källenius said during the announcement.

The investment will also support plans to relocate production of the high-volume GLC SUV from Germany to Alabama. This move is partly driven by recent U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles and parts, which have impacted automakers financially. By increasing local production, Mercedes-Benz aims to reduce these tariff burdens and strengthen its competitiveness in the U.S. market.

In addition to expanding SUV production capabilities, the company is establishing a new research and development hub in Atlanta, Georgia, which will consolidate around 500 jobs from different locations across the United States. This development underlines Mercedes-Benz’s commitment not only to manufacturing but also to innovation within its American operations.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey praised Mercedes-Benz for its strategic vision and ongoing partnership with the state. She noted that the automaker’s presence has transformed Alabama’s economy and workforce over three decades. Other dignitaries attending the event included U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville as well as U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

With this latest $4 billion investment, Mercedes-Benz reinforces Alabama’s position as a key player in global auto manufacturing. The company’s U.S. footprint now includes vehicle assembly plants in Alabama and South Carolina, a headquarters and R&D center in Atlanta, and an extensive dealer network nationwide. This growth reflects both confidence in Alabama’s skilled workforce and an adaptive strategy responding to evolving trade policies and market demands.
