Audi is preparing to expand its SUV lineup with the upcoming Q9, its largest model to date. But in China, the spotlight belongs to an even bigger vehicle—not from Audi itself, but from AUDI, the all-caps, all-electric sub-brand created exclusively for the Chinese market. The new E7X SUV, revealed ahead of its official debut at the Beijing Auto Show next month, marks AUDI’s boldest move yet.
A New Identity: AUDI, Not Audi
Launched in China in 2024, AUDI distinguishes itself from the traditional Audi brand with its minimalist, tech-focused design and block-capital logo. Unlike Audi, AUDI vehicles do not feature the iconic four-ring emblem. A product of Volkswagen Group’s joint venture with Chinese state-owned automaker SAIC, AUDI designs vehicles specifically for Chinese consumers, beginning with the E5 Sportback. After a slow start, the brand is counting on the E7X, a large, stylish SUV, to accelerate its growth.
Impressive Power and Performance
The E7X offers both dual-motor and single-motor powertrains, producing 670 hp and 402 hp, respectively. The dual-motor variant can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.97 seconds. An all-aluminum chassis contributes to improved handling, offsetting the considerable weight of the E7X’s massive 109 kWh battery—the largest in its class, surpassing competitors like the Cadillac Lyriq, BMW iX, and Volvo EX90.
Despite the large battery, the E7X achieves a maximum range of 467 miles. While this falls short of the 500-plus-mile benchmarks being set in today’s EV market, the SUV benefits from a 900V electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging. According to AUDI, the E7X can gain up to 200 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
Luxury-Oriented Design
Details on the E7X interior remain limited, but AUDI confirms a five-seat layout, setting it apart from the seven-seat Q7. The vehicle is slightly wider and taller than the Q7, and nearly as long, suggesting a more premium positioning. Observers expect the cabin to incorporate the same high-tech features found in the E5 Sportback, including a continuous dashboard-spanning display.
The E7X will make its official debut at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24. However, there are no plans for the SUV to be sold outside of China. International buyers will need to look to the Q7 and the upcoming Q9 for their large Audi SUV options.
