Volkswagen has revealed its latest concept car — and for once, it’s not related to the coronavirus pandemic. The German automaker introduced the e-BULLI, a fully electric reinterpretation of its classic 1966 T1 Samba Bus, blending nostalgic design with modern electric vehicle technology.
The e-BULLI was developed in Hannover, Germany, and originally spent its earlier years cruising the roads of California. Now, it runs on a 45 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a range of up to 124 miles on a single charge. The charging port is cleverly located behind the rear license plate, maintaining the vehicle’s sleek vintage appearance.
While the exterior retains its iconic retro charm, the interior has been completely modernized. The eight-seater now features wood flooring, refreshed paint, and a digital display that provides essential information like remaining range — a crucial detail for any electric vehicle. Despite the updates, the cabin keeps some analog touches, such as a retro-style radio, while integrating contemporary conveniences like Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and compatibility with Volkswagen’s mobile app.
Adding to its appeal, the e-BULLI includes a panoramic folding roof, enhancing the open-air driving experience that made the original bus a cultural icon.
For European customers, the excitement isn’t limited to concept models. Volkswagen is offering electric conversions of the classic bus for €64,900 (approximately $64,900 USD), making the blend of retro design and modern sustainability accessible to enthusiasts.
Though social distancing measures may limit road trips with friends, the e-BULLI remains a nostalgic and forward-looking statement from Volkswagen, proving that classic charm and electric innovation can coexist.
