Volkswagen has unveiled a teaser image of the redesigned 2027 Atlas, its three-row midsize SUV and the brand’s second best-selling model in the U.S. last year, trailing only the Tiguan. As Volkswagen’s largest and priciest SUV in the American market, the Atlas is a crucial model for the automaker, especially after a 13% drop in U.S. sales last year.
The teaser focuses on the SUV’s rear end, highlighting its distinctive taillight design. Following the styling cues of the latest Tiguan, the 2027 Atlas will feature a full-width LED light bar that illuminates the VW logo in the center of the tailgate. Volkswagen says the SUV will sport “strong, muscular proportions and sleeker exterior surfacing” with “all-new sheetmetal,” although the teaser offers only a glimpse of these updates.
Observers note a strong resemblance to the Chinese-market Teramont Pro, launched by SAIC-Volkswagen last year. The taillight design in particular appears nearly identical, suggesting that the Atlas will continue its long-standing alignment with its Chinese counterpart. Recent spy photos of prototypes testing in North America further confirm this connection, showing a design closely mirroring the Teramont Pro’s modern styling.
The Teramont Pro’s design features—a sharper, more angular front end, integrated daytime running lights within an enclosed upper grille, a smoother side profile, and a sportier rear—hint at the direction Volkswagen is taking with the Atlas. If the new Atlas mirrors its Chinese sibling’s interior, it could see significant upgrades, including three dashboard displays, 30-color ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system, fragrance diffuser, and a front passenger seat with electric footrest, massage, and ventilation functions.
Mechanically, the 2027 Atlas will be built on Volkswagen’s MQB Evo platform and powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the fifth-generation EA888 family, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive. While U.S.-spec Tiguan variants of this engine deliver 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, the Atlas may vary slightly. The Chinese Teramont Pro extracts 295 lb-ft, which could preserve or even improve the current Atlas’ towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed additional powertrain options, though hybrid variants are a possibility given market trends.
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is set to make its official debut at the New York International Auto Show from April 3–12, with U.S. dealership availability expected this fall.
