Volvo has rolled out its largest over-the-air (OTA) software update to date, impacting more than 2.5 million vehicles across 85 countries. The upgrade introduces the new Volvo Car UX user experience system, promising faster load times, improved intuitiveness, and a more driver-friendly interface.
The update affects a wide range of models built from 2020 onward, including the C40, XC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country, and XC90, along with Volvo’s all-electric EX40 and EC40.
“This update is one of the largest over-the-air updates in automotive history, leveraging years of investment in Volvo Cars’ tech stack to improve life with their cars for millions of people,” said Anders Bell, Volvo Cars’ chief engineering and technology officer. “Our new user experience delivers significant updates in areas most used by drivers and directly addresses the needs and desires of our customers.”
The software refresh, which is compatible with Volvo models running its Android Auto-based system, aims to provide quicker access to frequently used functions. A redesigned layout makes navigation more prominent, incorporates real-world research, and integrates feedback from customers.
A key feature of the update is the home screen’s improved accessibility. Frequently used apps and controls, including phone, media, and maps, are now directly available, allowing drivers to switch between functions without exiting their current application.
The update also introduces a dynamic contextual bar that adapts to driving conditions. For example, when driving at low speeds, an external camera icon appears to assist with tight-space maneuvers.
Plug-in hybrid drivers benefit from simplified access to driving modes. The ‘Pure’ mode, for instance, can now be activated directly from the home screen with a single tap.
Volvo is offering the update free of charge to drivers of cars built after 2020. Other owners with Google-based systems can purchase the upgrade. Additionally, Volvo plans to roll out a further enhancement this spring, introducing Google Geminii to the same eligible models.
