Volvo is pushing automotive safety forward with the introduction of its world-first “multi-adaptive” seatbelt technology on the new EX60 electric SUV.
The Swedish automaker, which first introduced the seatbelt to Europe in 1956, has taken the nearly seven-decade-old safety device to a new level. The multi-adaptive seatbelt uses real-time data from a network of interior and exterior sensors to automatically adjust to each occupant’s height, weight, and seating position.
In practical terms, the system can tailor belt tension according to the severity of a crash and the size of the occupant. A larger passenger involved in a serious collision would receive a higher belt load to help reduce the risk of head injuries, while a smaller occupant in a milder crash would experience a gentler load to minimize the likelihood of rib fractures.
The EX60 will offer three battery options: 83kWh, 95kWh, and 110kWh, allowing for flexibility in performance and range. Volvo’s over-the-air software updates ensure that the multi-adaptive seatbelt system will continue to evolve, learning from driving patterns and occupant behavior to enhance safety over time.

The latest multi-adaptive seatbelt in the new EX60 is a testament to our pioneering technology and approach to safety that continues today.”
Further details on the Volvo EX60 are expected to be released soon, with sales anticipated to begin later this year.
