An English teenager who underwent a hair transplant at the age of 16 says the procedure helped her overcome years of insecurity tied to her appearance.
Yasmine, now 18 and from Nottingham, shared her hair restoration journey on social media, documenting the results of a 3,000-graft transplant she traveled to Turkey to receive. Speaking about her experience, she said the decision was driven by long-standing concerns about her forehead and hairline, which she felt had significantly affected her mental health.
“I avoided photos, felt uncomfortable in social situations, and constantly obsessed over my hairline,” she said, describing the insecurity she had struggled with since childhood.
Seeking a permanent solution, Yasmine traveled to Istanbul, a global hub for medical tourism known for comparatively affordable cosmetic procedures. She said Turkey was the “best option” due to its reputation for hair transplant surgeries and more accessible pricing.
The procedure cost her £1,110 (approximately $1,500), a fee that covered the surgery, hotel accommodation, transportation, aftercare essentials and recovery support. According to the U.K.’s National Health Service (NHS), hair transplants in Britain can range from around £1,000 to as much as £30,000, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
During the seven-hour operation, doctors extracted 3,000 hair grafts from the back of her shaved scalp and implanted them along the front of her hairline to lower it. The recovery process, she said, required patience.
“Initially, the new hairs grow and then fall out, which is completely normal,” Yasmine explained. “After the shedding phase, the hair grows back thicker and stronger. Now that I’m over a year post-op, my hair looks natural and full.”
She reported no major complications following the surgery, aside from temporary discomfort while sleeping and tightness around her scalp. Over time, she said, those symptoms resolved normally.
However, medical experts caution that such procedures may not be suitable for minors. Dr. Tracy Evans, a board-certified dermatologist and medical director of Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology in the United States, recommends that elective hair transplant surgery be reserved for patients over 18.
“It takes a long time for these hairs to grow in, which patients often underestimate,” Evans said, noting that younger patients may experience psychological distress during the lengthy regrowth process. She added that individuals should be mature enough to determine whether the procedure is appropriate for them.
Despite the debate surrounding age and cosmetic surgery, Yasmine says the transplant has had a profound impact on her self-esteem.
“The surgery has changed my entire life,” she said. “Before, I hated how I looked and my mental health was in a really bad place. Now I’m more confident, happier, and I feel like I can live my life without that insecurity holding me back.”
