Breakthroughs in Breast Cancer Surgery Merge Science and Patient Support for Better Outcomes

by Shreeya

Recent advances in breast cancer surgery are transforming the way patients receive treatment, with a growing focus on both scientific innovation and personal experiences. Medical experts say that understanding tumor biology is increasingly guiding decisions about surgery, moving away from treatments based only on general risk.

Patrick Borgen, MD, a leading surgeon at Maimonides Medical Center, explained the impact of new technology such as minimal residual disease (MRD) detection and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) testing on breast cancer care. These technologies allow doctors to get more accurate information about the cancer’s behavior. Dr. Borgen pointed out that even before the medical field fully understood how to use this data, these tools were shaping treatments by providing valuable insights into each patient’s tumor.

At the center of this progress are the experiences of patients who face the challenges of breast cancer diagnosis and therapy. Melissa Hill, a surgical technician at Lexington Medical Center, shared her personal battle with stage one, HER2 non-aggressive breast cancer. Hill, who spent nearly two decades helping other patients in the operating room, found herself navigating the uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis in June 2023. Her journey included chemotherapy and radiation, with chemotherapy being her greatest hurdle. She described the emotional and physical exhaustion, saying there were days she felt too weak to get out of bed and moments when she almost lost hope.

Throughout her treatment, Hill drew strength from her family, her co-workers, and her church community. Messages of support and prayers gave her the courage to continue, even during the most difficult times. Losing her hair was tough, but she realized that her life was far more important than her appearance. Today, Hill is cancer-free and credits early detection through mammograms for saving her life. She encourages others to get screened and to keep fighting, no matter how hard the journey may seem.

These developments in technology and individual stories highlight the ongoing changes in breast cancer care. As medical professionals use new tools to personalize treatment, patients’ voices and experiences remind everyone of the hope, resilience, and support that are essential for recovery.
