A South Florida teenager, Isabel Gurvitch, is helping women in Ukraine receive vital breast cancer screenings, even as the war continues to disrupt daily life. Inspired by her mother’s experience surviving breast cancer, Gurvitch founded the non-profit MammogramMe after her family relocated to Miami for safety.
Gurvitch noticed that many women still in Ukraine are unable to access the necessary health checks due to the ongoing conflict. To address this, MammogramMe partnered with one of Ukraine’s largest hospitals, Adonis, sending funds so the hospital can provide mammograms directly to women in need. According to Gurvitch, the organization has funded over 200 mammograms during the past three years.
Working alongside Gurvitch is her friend Mahika Jassal, who currently lives in Poland. Jassal leads a chapter of MammogramMe at the American School of Warsaw, where more than 35 members help raise funds and awareness for the cause. The two friends say that seeing the positive impact on women’s lives motivates them to continue their efforts.
Now, MammogramMe has expanded to five chapters, each working to raise money for breast cancer screenings. Isabel’s mother, Anna Gurvitch, expressed pride in her daughter and the volunteers, noting their determination and independence.
Looking to the future, Gurvitch and Jassal aim to increase fundraising so they can offer further support for cancer treatment to women in Ukraine who cannot afford it. Their initiative has brought hope and assistance to many Ukrainian women during a challenging time, showing how determination and community support can make a difference.
