Major renovation efforts at two popular destinations—Hilton Head Island’s CocoNutz Sportz Bar and Shankhumukham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram—illustrate the challenges and opportunities that come with upgrading public venues to enhance visitor experience.
In Hilton Head Island, CocoNutz Sportz Bar, located within the Hilton Head Island Beach & Tennis Resort, is undergoing a major transformation. Plans presented to the local design review board show extensive changes to the restaurant’s facade facing Folly Field Road, making it nearly unrecognizable for returning guests. The renovation includes an expansion of the outdoor deck, adding 900 square feet for dining and entertainment. Upgrades also feature improvements in landscaping and hardscaping, creating additional space for diners and events. Project leaders hope these changes will increase the venue’s efficiency and appeal, making it a more attractive destination for both resort guests and locals.
In contrast, Shankhumukham Beach recently experienced a different type of transformation. Last December, the beach received a thorough facelift for the Navy Day celebrations, with significant cleaning and beautification. However, just a few months afterward, visitors report the beach is once again cluttered with plastic waste, food wrappers, and bottles. Problems have arisen as local authorities debate responsibility for maintenance. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and the city corporation have blamed each other for poor waste management and insufficient cleaning. Recent penalties have been imposed, and interdepartmental meetings are being planned to resolve ongoing disputes.
Local officials and former ward representatives stress that cleanup drives and proper infrastructure are crucial for sustaining improvements. The number of sanitation workers appears adequate, but critics point to the need for better waste management systems and more consistent maintenance. Waste bins and collection kiosks are in place, yet complaints persist about irregular removal and lack of upkeep. Unauthorized vendors and inappropriate use of waste facilities have further complicated the situation.
Despite the obstacles, community members and voluntary organizations have periodically offered support through organized clean-up drives. Leaders from various groups urge closer cooperation between public departments and the community. They maintain that consistent engagement and clear responsibility among stakeholders are essential to preserving the benefits of renovations and ensuring clean, welcoming public spaces for everyone.
As these examples show, cosmetic upgrades and facelifts can initially transform physical venues, but lasting change requires ongoing maintenance and strong partnerships between local governments, businesses, and the wider community.
