A new art exhibition in London is showcasing striking images of breast cancer cells to highlight the beauty that exists even within a serious disease. The project was created by scientist Vincent Muczynski, whose wife Anais Muczynski, an orthoptist, is living with incurable breast cancer. After Anais received her primary diagnosis in early 2023, she went through chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and a double mastectomy. By mid-2024, she was considered disease-free, but later that year discovered a new lump leading to the diagnosis of stage four, incurable breast cancer.
Vincent, a research fellow at the UCL Cancer Institute, was inspired by Anais and the stories of other patients. He began creating large-scale visuals using laboratory-grown breast cancer cells treated with advanced immunotherapy. The cells were photographed with fluorescent microscopy and then reworked artistically. The aim of these images is to educate people affected by breast cancer and show the possibilities of science and art coming together.
Anais, who is participating in a clinical trial since January 2025 and responding well to treatment, has returned to work and resumed activities like aerial arts. She recently performed at a charity gala for the Pink Ribbon Foundation, a charity supporting people affected by breast cancer. Anais said facing the artistic images of treated cancer cells has been cathartic, helping her accept and understand her illness.
The exhibition, titled “Beyond The Ribbon,” is hosted by the Pink Ribbon Foundation and is open at the Firepit Art Gallery in Greenwich. Lisa Allen from the Foundation emphasized the importance of sharing the human stories behind every cancer cell and raising awareness that breast cancer affects people of all ages.
Vincent and Anais, originally from France, hope the exhibition will give patients, families, and colleagues a better understanding of breast cancer and how new treatments work. By magnifying and transforming lab research into art, Vincent wants to show that even in the fight against a difficult disease, there is beauty to be found.
