For the first time in Uttarakhand, doctors at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital in Dehradun have successfully performed a complex breast reconstruction using a patient’s own tissue after removal of the breast due to multicentric breast cancer. The hospital announced that their team, led by senior cancer surgeon Dr. Ajit Tiwari, carried out the surgery, which marks a major advancement in the region’s medical capabilities.
The patient was diagnosed with multicentric breast cancer, a condition where multiple cancerous lumps develop in different areas of the breast. In such situations, surgery to remove only part of the breast is not possible. Doctors said a total mastectomy, or complete removal of the breast, was necessary.
To reconstruct the breast, surgeons performed an autologous procedure, meaning they used muscles and skin from the patient’s own body. This approach is considered safer compared to silicone breast implants, which can sometimes cause infection, implant failure, pain, and may require more surgeries in the future. Dr. Tiwari explained that reconstruction with a patient’s own tissue often results in a more natural appearance, better sensation, and improved long-term health outcomes.
The operation required special expertise in anatomy and microsurgery. Hospital officials noted that not only does it reduce implant-related risks, but it also helps patients recover more fully and confidently. They added that this method offers hope, especially for younger women who want to reclaim a normal life after cancer treatment.
This successful surgery is being hailed as a breakthrough for cancer care in Uttarakhand and is expected to inspire wider adoption of advanced breast reconstruction techniques in the area.
