Bupa Reconsiders Policy After Denied Breast Lump Surgery Claim Is Reversed and Fully Covered

by Shreeya

A woman in West Yorkshire faced a difficult decision after discovering a lump in her breast and being denied coverage for surgery by her private health insurer, Bupa. Despite medical advice recommending the removal of the lump to check for cancer, Bupa initially refused the claim, labeling the procedure as preventative rather than diagnostic.

The woman’s consultant, along with her family, made several appeals to the insurer, providing letters and direct communication to confirm the necessity of the surgery. Her surgeon emphasised that the procedure aligned with national health guidelines and should be considered best practice in ruling out serious conditions.

After multiple refusals from Bupa, the family chose to pay over £4,000 out of their own pocket for the surgery. The hospital consent form clearly indicated that the operation was needed for a diagnostic purpose: to rule out malignancy. This was the exact reason given to the insurer, yet the claim remained rejected. Even after a formal complaint and re-evaluations, Bupa upheld its decision, leaving the family with no coverage as the wife underwent the operation.

Following further intervention and presentation of new evidence, Bupa convened a meeting of senior staff to re-examine its stance. The insurer then acknowledged a mistake had been made and confirmed the claim would be covered. Bupa apologised directly to the couple, reimbursed all medical costs, and offered a goodwill payment.

The case resulted in Bupa updating its internal assessment criteria for similar breast lump removal procedures, clarifying that the removal of ductal papillomas should be considered diagnostic and covered under health insurance. The woman received confirmation that her lump was non-cancerous, though some atypical cells were found, increasing future breast cancer risk. Bupa stated it would support her if any further medical care was required.
