Breast Reduction Surgery Offers Relief to Women Facing Migraines and Chronic Pain from Large Breasts

by Shreeya

Large breasts, often admired in many cultures, are now increasingly recognized for the health issues they can cause. Many women with large breasts report daily pain, headaches, difficulty with exercise, and mental struggles. New research and patient experiences highlight that these concerns go far beyond appearance, affecting quality of life and health.

Recent studies led by Wake Forest University School of Medicine have found that women seeking breast reduction surgery commonly experience severe headaches. Surprisingly, many such women actually suffer from migraines rather than simple tension headaches. In one study of 34 adult women, most who were planning surgery and experienced at least four headache days per month screened positive for migraines. After their surgeries, many of these women reported fewer and less severe headaches, as well as improved sleep and relief from neck pain. The improvements continued for more than a year in some cases.

Medical experts caution that while breast reduction is not proven as a direct treatment for migraines, the link between large breasts and these health problems deserves greater attention. Dr. Kristyn Pocock, a neurology expert involved in the study, stresses the need for better examination by doctors. The current practice often overlooks migraine as a possible issue, leaving patients to suffer longer or receive the wrong treatment. There is growing interest in large-scale studies to better understand how posture, breast weight, nerve strain, and other factors might worsen headache symptoms.

The personal stories of women who choose breast reduction surgery illustrate these findings. Raquel, a university professor from Argentina, describes how shame and chronic pain due to large breasts limited her physical activity and happiness for years. After her surgery, she reported feeling “free” for the first time in years, able to move without pain and engage in her favorite activities like yoga once again. This sense of freedom is echoed in the experiences of many women worldwide.

According to the International Society for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, over 650,000 breast reduction surgeries were performed globally in 2024, with the highest numbers in Brazil, the United States, and several European countries. The growth in such surgeries signals a focus on comfort, health, and active living among women. Many patients say they are motivated not by looks, but by the desire for a better, pain-free life. Doctors also emphasize the importance of well-fitting bras, as poor support can cause additional health problems such as shoulder pain, poor posture, and even changes to breathing patterns.
