New Initiative in Leamington Improves Breast Cancer Care with On-site Reconstruction Surgeries

by Shreeya

A new breast reconstruction program at Erie Shores HealthCare in Leamington is set to give breast cancer patients more treatment options close to home, reflecting both medical advances and patients’ ongoing experiences with recovery. The initiative, supported by a significant investment from the County of Essex, will allow individuals to complete their breast cancer care journey — from diagnosis to reconstruction — without traveling to larger cities.

The hospital’s expanded plastic surgery services will make it possible for patients to receive screenings, biopsies, surgeries, and reconstruction all in one place. According to hospital officials, this coordinated care aims to ease a process that is often physically and emotionally difficult for patients. Katelyn Dryden, chief financial officer and vice-president of outpatient services at the hospital, stressed the importance of timely and connected care that keeps people close to their families during a challenging period.

As part of the program, the hospital has obtained advanced surgical equipment and introduced new techniques such as magnetic seed implants, which help doctors pinpoint tumor locations more precisely during biopsies and surgeries. Patients will also have access to advanced imaging and improved scheduling for Ontario Breast Screening Program appointments. Alicia Lutz, the hospital’s clinical director of outpatient services, explained that these steps will lead to better collaboration among care teams and a more supportive experience for patients from diagnosis through recovery.

Local officials hope the new program will reduce the burden on patients by minimizing travel and offering comprehensive care within the community. Essex County Warden Hilda MacDonald highlighted that investing in local health services makes a real difference for residents during vulnerable times.

The news comes as stories from breast cancer survivors draw attention to the realities of reconstruction surgery. TV personality Seo Jung-hee recently spoke about her journey following a mastectomy and breast reconstruction. She described experiencing significant pain during tissue expansion, a necessary step in reconstructive surgery, as well as the emotional impact of the procedure. Her account underlines the importance of ongoing improvements in surgery and patient care, which programs like the one at Erie Shores HealthCare hope to address.
