Comedian and voice actor Ron Funches is sharing the ups and downs of his recent hair transplant, revealing that the timing of the procedure coincided with his appearance on The Traitors — landing him in the transplant’s notorious “shedding phase” while the show aired.
Through Instagram Stories, Funches offered a candid and humorous reflection on the experience, acknowledging the awkward attention it drew while emphasizing that the results are already showing promise.
In one post, he joked about a lesson learned the hard way: “Not going on a big show during the ‘shedding phase’ of a hair transplant.” Funches noted that this stage often prompts plenty of direct messages pointing it out, signing off with a self-aware, “Whoops.”
The shedding phase, also known as shock loss, is a normal, temporary part of the hair transplant process. During this period, transplanted hairs fall out as follicles reset before new growth begins — a timing that can be tricky for those in the public eye.
Despite the temporary awkwardness, Funches shared a follow-up Story celebrating his progress. A photo revealed a noticeably fuller head of hair, captioned, “But the comeback is strong,” set to Willow Smith’s Whip My Hair. He also posted a back-angle view of his head, reassuring fans he’s currently “60% on the time frame” with more growth to come.
Reflecting on his journey, Funches acknowledged the positives of his former look, posting a throwback from his bald days with the caption, “But found out bald me is beautiful. So who knows.”
Funches joins a growing list of celebrities openly discussing hair restoration. Last summer, Love Is Blind star Jimmy Presnell shared his hair transplant experience, while actor and former pro wrestler John Cena told PEOPLE last year that he loved his new look and wished he had undergone the procedure sooner. “I hate the fact that if there wasn’t so much shame around it, I’d have gotten it done 10 years ago,” Cena said, adding that the procedure simply relocates existing hair and “completely changed the course of my life.”
By sharing both the challenging and empowering aspects of his hair transplant, Funches is helping to normalize conversations about hair loss and the choices people make to regain confidence.
