Lisa Hart, 45, a mother of five from Ayrshire, hoped to regain confidence in her appearance after childbirth, but a breast reduction and reconstruction procedure in Glasgow turned into a harrowing ordeal.
In May 2025, Lisa underwent a four-hour surgery at a Glasgow clinic, paying £15,500 for the procedure. A week later, she noticed “green fluid” leaking from her right breast onto her bandages. Initially reassured by the clinic that this was normal, Lisa continued to experience complications, including a small hole in her breast and fever-like symptoms.
After repeatedly raising concerns for over a month with no resolution, Lisa sought emergency care at Ayr University Hospital in June 2025. Doctors diagnosed her with sepsis and determined the right implant had to be removed immediately. She spent ten days in hospital recovering from the infection.
Lisa described the experience as life-threatening. “There was a point where I thought I would die. You hear all the horror stories – but never did I think it would happen to me here in Glasgow,” she said.
The surgery left Lisa with uneven breasts, her right now a B-cup and her left a C-cup. She must return to the same clinic to attempt corrective surgery, as no other providers are willing to treat her.
The ordeal has profoundly affected her mental and physical health. Lisa explained, “The effect on my mental health was terrible – and I’m now physically out of it. I keep myself at home and only leave for medical reasons or essential shopping. I even need to wear loose clothing to cover my chest and struggle to look at myself in the mirror.”
Lisa’s husband, Steven, 54, accompanied her to the clinic for the surgery, believing she would be in safe hands. She reflected on the financial and emotional toll: “I spent £15,500 thinking I was in the best care, and it could have been half the price in Turkey. All I wanted was to feel womanly. Now, I just look back at my before photos and cry because I miss my old body.”
