FDA Approves Wegovy Oral Pill for Weight Loss, Offering a More Convenient Alternative to Injections

by Shreeya

The blockbuster weight-loss drug Wegovy, previously available only as an injection, is now hitting the U.S. market in a more convenient oral pill form. The new formulation of semaglutide, Wegovy’s active ingredient, was approved by the FDA in December 2025 and could revolutionize how millions of Americans approach weight management.

For many patients, the pill means fewer injections, lower costs, and potentially better adherence to long-term treatment plans.

Effectiveness of the Wegovy Pill Compared to the Injection

The Wegovy pill is the first oral GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist) approved in the U.S. specifically for weight loss. GLP-1 medications help regulate appetite, blood sugar, and insulin levels, and have been widely used in treating diabetes and obesity.

Clinical trial data submitted to the FDA showed that patients taking the Wegovy pill lost an average of 13.6% of body weight over 15 months, nearly matching the 15% average loss observed with the injectable version. Side effects were similar and included nausea, vomiting, constipation, and fatigue, especially during dose escalation.

The pill offers a compelling alternative for patients who dislike injections or face supply issues, providing nearly equivalent weight-loss results without the needle.

Cost and Insurance Coverage

The Wegovy pill is priced lower than the injectable version, particularly for self-pay patients accessing the drug through telehealth platforms or Novo Nordisk’s direct-to-patient program, NovoCare. Monthly self-pay costs range from $149 to $299, compared with $199 to $349 for the injection.

Insurance coverage remains inconsistent. A 2024 survey by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans found that:

  • 55% of U.S. employers cover GLP-1s for diabetes only
  • 36% cover them for both diabetes and weight loss
  • Only 17% of employers covering diabetes-only GLP-1s were considering expanding coverage to obesity treatment

High costs and adherence concerns continue to limit coverage for weight-loss drugs, leaving many patients paying out-of-pocket. Novo Nordisk does offer savings programs that can reduce monthly costs to as little as $25 for eligible patients, typically after deductibles are met.

Where to Access the Wegovy Pill

The pill is available nationwide at pharmacies and can be ordered via telehealth providers. NovoCare provides an official direct-to-patient program, offering streamlined access, consultations, and transparent pricing.

GLP-1 Drugs Are Transforming Weight-Loss Treatment

The Wegovy pill enters a rapidly expanding market for GLP-1 weight-loss medications, which have surged in popularity since 2022. According to a 2025 KFF report, roughly 1 in 8 U.S. adults now uses a GLP-1 drug for weight loss, diabetes, or both, a figure expected to rise given nearly 40% of American adults are classified as obese.

Beyond weight loss, GLP-1 drugs are being explored for other conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk reduction, chronic kidney disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and metabolic liver disease. (The Wegovy pill is not yet approved for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, although the injectable version is.)

Long-Term Use and Adherence

One challenge with GLP-1 therapy is persistence. Many patients without diabetes stop treatment within the first two years due to cost, side effects, or unmet expectations. However, recent analyses indicate improved adherence with injectable GLP-1s, likely due to better education and side effect management.

The introduction of an easier-to-take oral pill like Wegovy could further increase long-term use, improve outcomes, and reduce weight regain.

Competition in the Weight-Loss Market

Novo Nordisk is not alone. Eli Lilly plans to launch its oral weight-loss drug, orforglipron, later in 2026, with starter doses priced at $149 per month and maintenance doses up to $399. The competition is likely to increase accessibility and affordability for patients seeking medical weight-loss solutions.
