A 21-year-old woman has died after suffering severe complications following cosmetic surgery at a private clinic in Colombia, prompting an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding her treatment.
Maria Jose Torres Osorio underwent breast augmentation and abdominoplasty procedures but began experiencing intense pain and dizziness just hours after the operations. Despite the early onset of symptoms, her condition continued to worsen in the days that followed.
Eight days after the surgery, Maria—who was originally from the coastal city of Ciénaga—was rushed to a hospital in Neiva as her health rapidly deteriorated. Doctors reported that she suffered a cardiac arrest and went on to develop multiple organ failure.
Medical staff later determined that she was brain dead, with doctors suggesting the condition may have been caused by prolonged oxygen deprivation to several vital organs. Given the seriousness of her condition, Maria was placed on life support, but she failed to show any signs of recovery.
After days of no improvement, her family made the decision to withdraw life-sustaining treatment. Maria’s death was confirmed nine days after she underwent the cosmetic procedures.
Her father has since accused the clinic of failing to provide adequate information and guidance before and after the surgery. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether there was any medical negligence or breach of professional standards involved in her care.
The case has renewed concerns over the safety of cosmetic surgery, particularly procedures carried out in private or poorly regulated clinics. Medical experts have repeatedly warned that complications such as infections, sepsis, cardiac arrest and hypoxic brain injury can occur when surgeries go wrong, sometimes with fatal consequences.
Maria’s death adds to a growing number of cases worldwide that have sparked calls for stricter oversight, better patient education and greater accountability within the cosmetic surgery industry.
